I MOTIVI
Il 2011 chiude un’era, quella della Dallara IR03, che nella maledetta ultima corsa di Las Vegas vede eclissarsi un record encomiabile. Nessun pilota aveva mai perso la vita a bordo di una Dallara IndyCar. In un’ultima corsa troppo veloce, troppo affollata, che suscita timori prima della bandiera verde e condanne unanimi dopo la bandiera rossa, si assiste a un incidente multiplo che sà di tempesta perfetta. Quasi tutti incredibilmente se la cavano, tranne uno, Dan Wheldon, che ha l’unica colpa di trovarsi al posto sbagliato nel momento sbagliato. La tragedia di Las Vegas arriva pochi mesi dopo il momento forse più alto della carriera del pilota inglese, che rimasto senza un volante stabile dopo il 2010, vince incredibilmente una pazza edizione del centenario della Indy500. Le prospettive di una splendida vita e di una rinnovata carriera si chiudono invece a Las Vegas per il campione 2005, la cui scomparsa lascia l’ambiente in uno stato di profondo shock. I fatti dell’ultima corsa oscurano un campionato ancora avvincente, che pur confermando un Will Power velocissimo ma ancora non al top sugli ovali, vede un copione ribaltato rispetto al 2010. Franchitti è infatti ampiamente in testa al giro di boa, salvo poi dilapidare tutto a causa di qualche errore di troppo e un’ultima carica del rivale australiano, che incappa però in un brutto stop al penultimo appuntamento. Nonostante il discorso titolo rimanga appannaggio dei piloti Ganassi e Penske, l’ultima stagione della IR03 si dimostra incerta e spettacolare, dando spazio a imprese inaspettate, come la vittoria di Conway a Long Beach e un grande duello per il quarto posto in campionato tra i veterani Servia e Kanaan.
